I've been experimenting and it may be the current size of the image (I've been adding to it every day). No, it's an RGB 8-bit image with two layers (both rasterized). Anybody have any ideas?ĭid you convert to gray scale per chance? If so, convert back to RGB if you want to use filters. Nothing I've read on the internet solves this issue. I have saved the image and restarted Photoshop. I have four layers and all are rasterized. All filters have been working fine until today. I have been able to access the filters since I created this image a week ago. Most people who used the Artistic and Brush filters in the 1990's have moved on to more advanced 3rd party filters or have begun to use more advanced techniques using newer features such as color blending brushes added in CS5 or the erodible brushes added in CS6.Īlmost all of my filters are suddenly grayed out. They cannot possibly rewrite every single line of code, so they try to priorities what is most used and popular. Last time I checked (which was around CS2) Photoshop was over 10million lines of code. If you are running Photoshop in 64-bit mode (which is usually how it runs unless you specifically start it up in 32bit mode) these options will either not show up or be grayed out. In order for Photoshop to be able to use old 32-bit plug-ins and filters, you may need to specifically start Photoshop in 32-bit mode, which will limit the amount of memory that Photoshop can use.

For the people who really need to use them, you can install them from the Photoshop installation CD, but the reason they were not included is that they were not updated to 64-bit code (this is the software, nothing to do with the image's bit-depth and mostly has to do with how much memory the software can handle). There are some rather old filters and Plug-Ins that haven't been popular and haven't been updated in a long time. This may or may not be the case, but since you mentioned installing filters from the install CD.

The retouching forum is generally better for Photoshop questions than this Pro Digital Talk forum (which often, but not always, focuses more on the business end of things). this way you have a 16bit unfiltered copy of the image in the file. If you are in the habit of saving layered files, an alternative would be to make a duplicate of the file, drop it to 8bit, apply the filter, and bring it back to the original 16-bit file as a separate layer.

All of these filters are destructive, so I would recommend keeping a no-edited version of the file as 16bit anyway. 8bit holds more colors than the human eye can see, 16bit is mostly useful for being able to make adjustments, so if you are make the adjustments in 16bit and only drop to 8bit to make the final filter, you really won't notice much difference. My advice is to figure your workflow out so that the filter would be the last step, and only drop to 8bit as you do that. This may be because the calculations are very complex or because they were written a very long time ago and have not been updated in a long time (many of these filters are not commonly used by many people). There are a handful of filters mostly distortion or stylize that are only compatible with 8bit images. Or more importantly, if I want to keep all my D800 pics in their original color bit depth I can't use any of those filters? If you have an adjustment layer (like curves, levels, etc.) highlighted in the layers pallet, practically all the filters will be greyed out, because you can't apply a filter to an adjustment layer (though you could select the filter's mask and apply the filter, but it may not give the effect you expect). You need to make sure that you have a layer selected (in the layer's pallet) that can accept such a filter. So if I use the selection tool to apply a certain effect to just a portion of the image, most of the filters, or at least the ones in question won't work?
